The Acting Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer in relation to the serious injuries suffered by a 23-year-old woman who fell off of an e-bike being pulled by a mini-bike. The Acting Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Quinte West detachment in relation to the death of a 52-year-old man who fell from an apartment balcony in Trenton in October of 2016. Prior to the man’s fall, police had made continuous efforts to convince the man to climb back into the apartment.21 December, 2017

SIU Finds Charges not Warranted against Hamilton Police Officers in Relation to Interaction with Man in Hospital
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a Hamilton Police Service officer in relation to a September 2016 interaction that occurred with a 33-year-old man in a hospital. Earlier that evening, the man, who was intoxicated, had been involved in an altercation with another individual on a municipal bus. Police were called. When officers located the man nearby, he was transported to hospital.12 December, 2017

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a Toronto Police Service officer in relation to the October 2016 death of a 41-year-old man who was working construction when he was struck by a motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against a Peel Regional Police (PRP) officer in relation to a multi-vehicle collision in April of 2016 that resulted in the death of a 33-year-old man who was in one of the vehicles, and serious injuries to a 35-year-old woman who was a passenger in another vehicle. Prior to the collision, PRP officers had been surveilling and had attempted to arrest the man.23 November, 2017

SIU Finds Charges not Warranted against a Barrie Detachment OPP Officer who was Involved in a Collision with Another Vehicle
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an Ontario Provincial Police officer with the Barrie detachment in relation to the injuries sustained by a 37-year-old woman on September 12, 2017. Just after noon on this date, the officer, who was operating an undercover police vehicle, collided with the rear end of the woman’s vehicle.23 November, 2017
SIU Affirms Hamilton Investigation after Reopening Case
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has reopened and affirmed its investigation into the injuries sustained by a 41-year-old man during his arrest in September of 2016. The case was initially closed in October of 2016 as the man indicated his injury had occurred as a result of his fall from a roof without any police intervention. The file was reopened as a result of the man providing new information to the SIU.23 November, 2017
