SIU Investigating Shooting in Kitchener

Mississauga, ON (3 March, 2017) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding a shooting injury sustained by a 39-year-old Cambridge man yesterday in Kitchener.

In a news release yesterday, The SIU wrote, “There was an interaction between the officer and the 39-year-old driver of the vehicle. The officer’s firearm was discharged, and the man was struck in the torso. At some point during the interaction, the officer also deployed a conducted energy weapon.”

This statement was based on preliminary information. As a result of obtaining further information during the course of the investigation, the SIU is still investigating who deployed the conducted energy weapon, and the exact timeline of events.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
