SIU Investigators in Cobourg to Investigate Death of Woman Following Police Interaction

Cobourg, ON (24 May, 2017) ---
Investigators from the province’s Special Investigations Unit are examining the circumstances surrounding the death of a 24-year-old woman inside a residence in Cobourg.

Preliminary information suggests the following occurred:
  • Just before 9:45 a.m. today, Cobourg Police Service received a call about a dangerous situation.
  • Not long after, three police officers attended a residence on Blake Street, in the William Street and King Street West area.
  • Around 11:00 a.m., a non-police issued firearm was discharged.
  • A 24-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.    
    
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
