SIU Investigation Started After Man Suffers Facial Injury in Search Warrant Execution

Mississauga, ON (16 June, 2017) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has started an investigation after a man suffered a serious facial injury during the execution of a search warrant in Toronto on June 15.

Preliminary information suggests the following occurred:
  • Around 5:00 a.m. on June 15, 2017, London Police Service officers were assisting Toronto Police Service officers with the execution of a search warrant at an apartment in the Jane Street and Shoreham Drive area in Toronto.
  • The police officers interacted with a man.
  • The man – believed to be in his 60s – suffered a serious facial injury and was transported to hospital.  

The SIU is appealing to anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
