Witnesses Sought for Collision Between OPP Cruiser and Other Vehicle; Civilians and Police Officers Sent to Hospital

Mississauga, ON (10 November, 2017) ---
Investigators with the province’s Special Investigations Unit are seeking witnesses to a collision involving a police cruiser late Thursday night in Belleville.  

The SIU was notified of the incident around 11:30 a.m. this morning.  Preliminary information suggests the following occurred:
  • Around 11:00 p.m. on November 9, 2017, two Ontario Provincial Police officers were transporting a prisoner in a police cruiser.
  • At the intersection of Sidney Street and Dundas Street West, the police cruiser was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
  • Five persons, including two police officers, were transported to hospital.  
  • Both OPP officers suffered serious injuries.  The driver of the civilian vehicle, a 21-year-old man, also suffered a serious injury.  None of the injuries is considered life threatening.
    
The SIU has designated one subject officer and one witness officer as part of this incident.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this investigation.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529. The Unit is also asking anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
