SIU Closes Investigation in Burnt River Death

Based on the Special Investigations Unit’s (SIU) preliminary enquiries into the death of a 51-year-old man in Burnt River earlier this month, SIU Director Tony Loparco has terminated the investigation. The incident, involving an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Kawartha Lakes Detachment, occurred on Monday, December 9, 2013.

SIU Comments on the Supreme Court of Canada's Decision in Wood v. Schaeffer

Today, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that police officers involved in SIU investigations are prohibited from consulting with lawyers prior to the preparation of their notes.

A 47-year-old man shot yesterday by an officer with the Durham Regional Police Service has succumbed to his injuries. His death was pronounced this morning. At the request of family, the man’s name will not be released at this time.

Update on Arrest of Toronto Police Service Constable James Forcillo

Arrangements have been made through Constable James Forcillo’s lawyer, Peter Brauti, for his client to surrender himself into the custody of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 20, 2013. Cst Forcillo will be transported to the Old City Hall and make an appearance before a Justice of the Peace shortly after the arrest.  Pursuant to the provisions of the Criminal Code, he will be detained in custody. The Criminal Code allows an accused to have the detention order reviewed in Superior Court and seek bail at any point in time.

Toronto Police Service Officer Charged in Death of Sammy Yatim

The Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ian Scott, has reasonable grounds to believe that a Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer committed a criminal offence in relation to the shooting death of 18-year-old Sammy Adib Yatim in July of 2013. Director Scott has caused a charge of Second Degree Murder contrary to s. 235(1) of the Criminal Code to be laid against the officer. The incident took place on a TTC streetcar around midnight on July 26-27, 2013.
