No Criminal Charges Warranted in Relation to Toronto Collision

Mississauga, ON (6 February, 2017) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained yesterday by a 57-year-old woman in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 5, 2017, officers with the Toronto Police Service attempted to stop a vehicle in the area of Yewtree Boulevard and Driftwood Avenue. The vehicle fled from police.
  • On Driftwood Avenue, south of Finch Avenue West, the fleeing vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle in which the 57-year-old female was a passenger.
  • The woman was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for treatment of an upper body injury.
    
Three investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist have been assigned to investigate this incident. At this time, one subject officer and two witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
