Officer Charged in Relation to London Vehicle Injuries

Mississauga (7 October, 2013) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by a 23-year-old woman this weekend in London.

Preliminary information indicates the following:
• On Sunday, October 6, 2013, at approximately 11 a.m., an officer with the London Police Service was traveling southbound on Adelaide Street to respond to a robbery-in-progress call;
• At the intersection of Adelaide Street and Oxford Street, there was a collision between the officer’s cruiser and a civilian vehicle traveling eastbound on Oxford Street. The civilian vehicle then struck two pedestrians;
• Both pedestrians were taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment. One individual was released with minor injuries. The 23-year-old woman remained in hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  

The SIU has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
