SIU Investigating Shooting Injuries in Toronto

Mississauga (10 February, 2013) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting injuries sustained by two individuals overnight in Toronto.
 
Preliminary information indicates the following:
•In the early morning hours of February 10, 2013, officers with the Toronto Police Service observed an altercation outside the Muzik nightclub, located inside the CNE grounds.
•Officers heard gunshots and saw a car leaving the area.
•When the car failed to stop, officers discharged gunshots at the car.
•The car stopped a short distance away near the Dufferin gate exit to the CNE.
•Of the three occupants in the vehicle, two were struck by projectiles and were taken to St. Michaels Hospital for treatment.

The SIU has assigned seven investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
