SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Brampton Collision

Mississauga (15 May, 2013) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is appealing for witnesses to a collision yesterday in Brampton between a Peel Regional Police (PRP) cruiser and a civilian vehicle. The collision resulted in serious injuries to a 50-year-old Brampton man.

Preliminary information indicates the following:
• Around noon on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, a PRP officer driving a marked cruiser was involved in a collision with a civilian vehicle at McLaughlin Road and Sandalwood Parkway West;
• The 50-year-old driver of the civilian vehicle was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. He sustained upper body injuries, including rib fractures. His 41-year-old passenger was taken to Brampton Civic Hospital, but released as he did not sustain serious injuries.

The SIU has assigned five investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

At this time, one subject officer with PRP and four witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
