Deputy Attorney General Attends SIU

Case Number: N/A

Mississauga (3 July, 2013) --- On June 19 and 20, members of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) took part in a tri-annual Investigators’ Training Seminar at the agency’s Mississauga headquarters. The informative two-day session brought investigators and staff members from across the province together for training on SIU systems and processes and allowed for professional development opportunities.

Deputy Attorney General Patrick Monahan spoke at the seminar. He acknowledged the important work that the SIU conducts and noted the importance of a strong relationship between the SIU and the Ministry to ensure the agency has the necessary support to pursue its mandate. Deputy Monahan spoke about the Ministry’s commitment to accountability and openness, giving a nod to the Agency Relations Division and to Assistant Deputy Attorney General, Ali Arlani, who attended the seminar with Deputy Monahan. The DAG also recognized the hard work and contribution that outgoing Director Ian Scott has made over the past five years while leading the SIU.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
