SIU Investigating Fatal Vehicle Collision in London

Mississauga, ON (17 August, 2023) ---
In the early morning hours of April 19, 2023, a London Police Service officer was on patrol when a GMC 3500HD pick-up truck caught her attention. The officer travelled behind the GMC until it fled. In the intersection of Thompson Road and Adelaide Street South, the GMC collided with a Ford F150 pick-up truck. The 62-year-old woman operating the Ford died at the scene. The 38-year-old driver of the GMC fled from the wreckage but was later captured and taken into custody. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the collision and the woman’s death. There was no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case, and the file has been closed.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
