SIU Continues Investigation into Toronto Shooting

Case Number: 11-TFI-008

Mississauga (12 January, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the firearm injuries sustained by a man early this morning in the city’s west end.

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) contacted the SIU today at 7:24 a.m.  The TPS reported that they had stopped a vehicle in the area of Keele St. and Annette St. that was wanted for an earlier fail-to-remain collision where a TPS officer was struck.  During the investigation of the driver a number of shots were fired by police.  The driver sustained gunshot injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto.  The man underwent surgery and is presently recovering in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and nine officers as witness officers.  Four civilian witnesses have been interviewed.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have information regarding this case to contact the Unit at 416-622-0748 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
