SIU Investigating Shooting in Toronto

Mississauga (12 January, 2011) --- Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) was contacted today by the Toronto Police Service (TPS) at 7:24 a.m.  The TPS reported that they had stopped a vehicle in the area of Keele St. and Annette St. that was wanted for an earlier fail-to-remain collision where a TPS officer was struck.  During the investigation of the driver a number of shots were fired by police.  The driver sustained gunshot injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Mike’s Hospital in Toronto.

The SIU has dispatched twelve (12) investigators and four (4) forensic investigators.  In addition the SIU’s Mobile Command Unit was sent to the scene.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
