SIU Concludes Investigation into Toronto Officer’s Gunfire at Man

Mississauga, ON (3 October, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a Toronto Police Service officer discharged a firearm during a robbery investigation in Toronto yesterday. No one was struck by police gunfire.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5 p.m. on October 2, 2024, officers were conducting a robbery investigation in the area of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue. 
  • At about 5:30 p.m., two men approached the officers. One of the men shot an officer and fled. The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries.
  • A second officer discharged his firearm at the man who fled. The man was not struck. 
  • Both men have been arrested. Neither man suffered serious injuries.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to this case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
