SIU Concludes Investigation into Man’s Fatal Fall in Brampton

Mississauga, ON (31 August, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man this morning in Brampton.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 7:30 a.m. on August 31, 2024, a Peel Regional Police officer was traveling southbound on Highway 410 when he observed a man standing on the Steeles Avenue overpass.
  • The officer made his way to the overpass to investigate further. At the same time, another individual had contacted police to report the location of the man.
  • Upon arrival, the officer spoke with the man.
  • A short time later, the man fell from the overpass to the southbound lanes of the highway.
  • The man was struck by multiple vehicles. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Monday.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
