SIU Investigating Man’s Fatal Fall from Overpass in Brampton

Mississauga, ON (27 December, 2024) ---
The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe a Peel Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the death of a 26-year-old man in August. As officers were on scene at the time, the SIU was notified and investigated.

On the morning of August 31, 2024, officers responded to the Steeles Avenue East bridge over Highway 410 after receiving 911 calls about a male on the bridge railing. As officers approached, the man leapt off the bridge and onto the highway.

Director Joseph Martino was satisfied the subject official comported himself with due care and regard for the man’s health and safety. He was unable to reasonably conclude that the officer transgressed the limits of care when he decided to approach the man, presumably to place himself in a position to communicate with him.

Full Director’s Report (with Incident Narrative, Evidence, and Analysis & Director’s Decision):

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
