SIU Investigating After Hospitalization of Woman Involved in Collision in Cambridge

Mississauga, ON (21 August, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a single-vehicle collision sent a 53-year-old woman to hospital in Cambridge early this morning. As a Waterloo Regional Police Service officer attempted to stop the driver prior to the collision, the SIU was notified.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Just after midnight, an officer on patrol attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle for Highway Traffic Act violations. 
  • The driver of the vehicle did not stop and was involved in a collision at a property in the area of Shantz Hill Road and Fountain Street South.
  • The woman was taken to hospital where she has been admitted and is being assessed.
  • The mechanics of the vehicle involved in the collision is being assessed. 
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One subject official has been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
