SIU Concludes Investigation into Man Injured During Arrest at Brampton Hospital
Case Number: 23-OCI-463
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Peel Regional Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with a broken nose suffered by a 60-year-old man during his arrest in Brampton. On November 7, 2023, the officer intervened to assist security guards at Brampton Civic Hospital as the man was acting unruly and violent. The man bit the officer and the officer kneed the man. The man continued to struggle and the officer kneed the man again, handcuffing him.
Director Martino accepted that while one or more of the initial set of knee strikes delivered by the officer caused the man’s nose to break, he did not believe the injury was attributable to any unlawful conduct on the part of the officer.
