SIU Updates Collision Investigation in Chatham

Mississauga (26 April, 2005) --- Investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in Chatham on April 25, 2005.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 1:05 p.m., officers from the Chatham-Kent Police Service attempted to stop a Chrysler Neon after it allegedly went through police radar. The Neon collided with a tree at the intersection of Indian Creek Road East and Creek Road.

There were three occupants in the Neon. A 26-year-old male passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination will be conducted this afternoon in Windsor.

The other passenger, a 24-year-old female, as well as the 33-year-old male driver are in hospital at the London Health Sciences Centre with multiple fractures.

The SIU has designated one subject officer and four witness officers from the Chatham-Kent Police Service and is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
