SIU Continues to Investigate Death in London

Case Number: 05-OCD-097

TORONTO (27 June, 2005) --- Five investigators and three forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continue to investigate the death of a man on Princess Avenue in London.

The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:25 a.m., officers from the London Police Service (LPS) were called to a home regarding an assault. When officers arrived, a male fired on them from inside the house; officers returned fire. When officers entered the home, they found the male dead from a gunshot wound. At one point during the incident, there was a fire inside the residence.

Four LPS officers received non-life threatening injuries during the incident and have been treated and released from hospital. The injuries are as follows:
1. gunshot wound to shoulder/upper arm;
2. gunshot graze to side of head;
3. smoke inhalation; and
4. smoke inhalation.

The SIU investigation is focusing on the nature and extent of police involvement, if any, in the death of the male who fired on the LPS officers. The LPS is conducting a parallel investigation which focuses on other deceased persons found inside the home. Questions regarding that investigation should be directed to the LPS.

A meticulous examination of the scene is being conducted. As a result, the SIU does not anticipate being in a position to release the identity of the deceased male until June 28, 2005 at the earliest.

The SIU continues to appeal for anyone who has any information about this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2150 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2150.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
