SIU Concludes Investigation into Death of London Man
SIU Continues to Investigate Death in London
The SIU was notified that at approximately 2:25 a.m., officers from the London Police Service (LPS) were called to an address on Princess Avenue regarding an assault. When officers arrived, they were fired upon by a male. As a result, officers returned fire. Two LPS officers received non-life threatening injuries as a result.
LPS officers then entered the home and found a number of deceased persons. That matter is currently under investigation by the LPS. The focus of the SIU probe is to determine the nature and extent of police involvement in the death of the male who fired on the LPS officers. That male was also found inside the home, deceased from a gunshot wound.
No further information regarding the identity of the deceased male or the post mortem examination is available at this time.
The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-2150 or 1-800-787-8529 extension 2150.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
