SIU Investigates Barrie Collision Death

The Barrie Police Service (BPS) contacted the SIU today at 4:20 p.m. and reported that just after 3:30 p.m. an officer attempted to stop a Mitsubishi automobile in the area of Ferndale Drive and Tiffin Street. The vehicle did not stop and a pursuit was initiated. In the area of Essa Road and Ferndale Drive the Mitsubishi was involved in a collision with a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda, a 48 year old Barrie man, was extricated from his car by fire department personnel. Both he and the driver of the Mitsubishi were taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital. Shortly after 4:00 p.m. the driver of the Honda succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Mitsubishi, a 15 year old Barrie youth, was treated at hospital for minor injuries.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
