SIU Investigates Barrie Collision Death

Mississauga (27 August, 2009) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the death of a 48 year old man involved in a collision in Barrie on Tuesday August 25, 2009.

The SIU investigation to date has determined that just after 3:30 p.m. a Barrie Police Service (BPS) officer stopped a Mitsubishi automobile in the area of Ferndale Drive and Tiffin Street to investigate the driver. Shortly after the stop, the driver drove off in his vehicle. The officer initiated a pursuit. In the area of Essa Road and Ferndale Drive the Mitsubishi was involved in a collision with a Honda Civic. The driver of the Honda, Steven Tuck of Barrie, sustained fatal injuries.

The SIU has designated one officer as a subject officer and seven officers as witness officers. In addition, a number of civilian witnesses have been interviewed.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
