June 10, 2020 Update: SIU Investigation into Woman’s Fatal Fall from Toronto Balcony

Mississauga, ON (10 June, 2020) ---
The SIU investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet – who fell from a Toronto apartment balcony on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 – continues. 

As of today: 
  • SIU investigators have completed a canvass of the area in an attempt to locate evidence and potential witnesses.
  • Investigators have interviewed the subject officer, all five witness officers and seven civilian witnesses. 
  • Video footage captured by security cameras at 100 High Park Avenue, the apartment building in which Ms. Korchinski-Paquet resided, has been secured and reviewed. 
  • All materials requested by the SIU of the Toronto Police Service have been received.
  • The SIU is waiting for the results of toxicological analysis.

Interviews with family members of Ms. Korchinski-Paquet have not yet been conducted, and the SIU is waiting on a decision from family counsel regarding their scheduling.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
