SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Toronto

Case Number: 05-TVD-159

TORONTO (2 October, 2005) --- Two investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are investigating whether a Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer was involved with a motorcycle that was in a collision with a car at the intersection of Talbot Road and Finch Avenue West. The collision happened earlier this morning around 1:30 a.m. and the SIU was notified at 5:15 a.m. when an independent witness said a TPS cruiser may have been in the area at the time of the collision.

The motorcycle was traveling westbound on Finch Avenue when it became involved in a collision with the car. As a result, two male riders on the motorcycle and the 19-year-old male driver of the car all suffered fatal injuries. Their identities are not being released at this time.

The SIU is probing whether a TPS officer was in any way involved with the motorcycle prior to the collision.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
