SIU Updates Investigation into Fatal Toronto Collision

TORONTO (3 October, 2005) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the nature and extent of a Toronto Police Service (TPS) officer's involvement with a motorcycle that collided with a car at the intersection of Talbot Road and Finch Avenue West.

Three people died from their injuries as a result of a collision that occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on October 2, 2005. The 19-year-old driver of the car has been identified as Nicholas Vanderboom. The driver of the motorcycle has been identified as 35-year-old Kenneth Walton and the passenger has been identified as 36-year-old Blake Deck.

The SIU has interviewed several civilian witnesses to the collision and the investigation is continuing. The Unit is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
