SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Hamilton
The driver and a passenger in a Mercedes Benz suffered fatal injuries when the car left the road and struck a house on Cochrane Road in Hamilton. The driver has been identified as Sheldon Gladders and the passenger as Matthew Loyer, both 20 years of age. A third man who was also inside of the car was taken to hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.
The SIU was notified that shortly before 3:00 a.m. yesterday, a Hamilton Police Service (HPS) officer in a marked cruiser saw the black Mercedes traveling eastbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. The officer started to pursue the car and followed it as it continued eastbound on Lawrence Road. A short time later, the car left the road and struck a house.
The SIU is probing the police activity in the circumstances surrounding the collision. SIU investigators continue to appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident or who has any information to call the SIU at 416-622-1886 or 1-800-787-8529 x 1886.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
