SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Hamilton
At approximately 2:56 a.m., on Saturday morning, three young men were in a Mercedes Benz and traveling eastbound on Lawrence Road. The driver of the car lost control, left the road and struck a house on Cochrane Road. The driver and front passenger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The rear passenger was taken to hospital where he is being treated for a broken leg.
The SIU is probing the police activity in the circumstances surrounding the collision. Investigators would like to speak with the following people who may have witnessed this incident:
· The occupant(s) in a black SUV that was traveling eastbound on Lawrence and turned north onto Arlington Road;
· The occupant(s) in a two tone blue Ford truck that was stationary and facing north on Cochrane Road;
· A man with a grey beard wearing a red t-shirt, who was seen standing near the intersection of Cochrane and Lawrence Roads.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
