SIU Concludes Fatal Hamilton Collision Investigation
SIU Investigates Fatal Collision in Hamilton
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the circumstances of the crash that occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. A Hamilton Police Service (HPS) officer attempted to stop a Volvo that was traveling eastbound on the Parkway. The car lost control and struck two other civilian vehicles near Dartnall Road.
Stephen Lawrence, 52 years of age, died at the scene. The single occupant of one vehicle that was struck was not injured. The female driver of the second vehicle was treated at hospital and released. The male passenger of the second vehicle remains in hospital with serious injuries.
The SIU is investigating the nature and extent of HPS involvement in the fatal collision and has designated one subject and two witness officers from the HPS. The SIU continues to appeal for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1988 or 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
