SIU Investigating Fatal Shooting in Rail Corridor involving Toronto Emergency Task Force

Toronto, ON (17 June, 2016) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of a man along a rail corridor in west Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Early this morning, a number of Toronto Police Service officers attended a rail corridor located between Weston Road and Highway 400, south of Sheppard Avenue West.  Emergency Task Force officers were also at the scene.    
  • Officers attempted to execute an arrest for trespassing under the Railway Safety Act.
  • There was a confrontation with a man.  Shortly after, an officer discharged his firearm.  A conducted energy weapon was also deployed.
  • The 42-year-old man was struck.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
    
Seven investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
