SIU Updates Investigation into Fatal Crash

Mississauga (6 April, 2005) --- One man has died and one man remains in critical condition at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre after the car they were in struck a tree on the front lawn of a home near the area of Finch Avenue and Yonge Street.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing in its investigation into the circumstances of the crash that occurred at approximately 3:05 a.m. this morning. Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers initiated a pursuit of a car after it failed to stop for a traffic violation. The car was traveling eastbound on Finch when it lost control and struck a tree. One man died at the scene and one is in hospital with serious head and internal injuries.

The identities of the two men are not being released at this time until positive identification and notification of families has been completed.

The SIU has designated one subject and five witness officers and the roads have now been re-opened. The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1957 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
