SIU Investigates Fatal Crash in Toronto

Case Number: 05-TVD-046

Mississauga (6 April, 2005) --- Investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing a fatal collision that occurred at approximately 3:05 a.m. this morning.

The SIU was notified that Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers initiated a pursuit of a car after it failed to stop for a traffic violation. The pursued car traveled eastbound on Finch Avenue. Near the area of Finch and Yonge Street, the car lost control and struck a tree on the front lawn of a home. One man in the car died at the scene and another man was taken to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in critical condition. No further information on the two men is available at this time.

The SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1957 or 1-800-787-8529. SIU investigators, including a collision reconstructionist, are currently processing the scene to determine factors such as speeds traveled during the pursuit.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
