SIU Appealing for Witnesses to Mississauga Collision

Mississauga, ON (28 October, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has reasonable grounds to believe a Halton Regional Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in relation to the pursuit of a stolen Hummer that ended up colliding with a tractor-trailer in Mississauga last year.

The SIU investigation found that on the morning of March 12, 2025, Halton Regional Police Service officers were investigating the theft of a Kia Sedona from a home in Oakville that also involved a stolen GMC Hummer. The drivers of both vehicles fled and officers attempted to stop them. Following a pursuit in Oakville and Mississauga led by Sgt Joseph, the driver of the Hummer was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer at Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East. The 26-year-old driver of the Hummer was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.

As a result of the SIU investigation, Sgt David Joseph is charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm, under section 320.13(2) of the Criminal Code.

Sgt Joseph is required to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice at 491 Steeles Ave E., in Milton on November 23, 2026, at 9 a.m.

As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
