SIU Concludes Shooting Injuries Investigation in Brampton

Mississauga (14 November, 2011) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the firearm injury to a 24-year-old man in Brampton yesterday.

The Peel Regional Police contacted the SIU and reported the following:

• At approximately 10:00 p.m. on November 13, officers attended Vodden Court to investigate a matter;

• Upon arrival, officers saw a male in a vehicle;

• At some point, two officers discharged their firearms;

• The vehicle fled the scene;

• A short time later, a male arrived at the Credit Valley Hospital with gunshot wounds to his arm and leg. His vehicle matched the description of the vehicle that fled from Vodden Court. He has since been transferred to St. Michael's Hospital for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries.

The SIU has assigned five investigators and two forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident. Two subject officers and four witness officers have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
