SIU Concludes Investigation into Shooting Death of Teenager in Aurora

Mississauga, ON (31 October, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 17-year-old male last night in Aurora.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 7:45 p.m. on October 30, 2024, an individual contacted police to report a break and enter in progress at a home on Downey Circle.
  • Soon after York Regional Police officers arrived on scene, there was an exchange of gunfire between the 17-year-old and four police officers.
  • The teenager was struck multiple times. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. 
  • One officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
 
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Toronto.

Four subject officials and five witness officials have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
