SIU Investigating OPP Officer’s Firearm Discharge in Kapuskasing Area

Mississauga, ON (21 September, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an Ontario Provincial Police officer discharged his firearm at a 36-year-old man last night. 

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 8:30 p.m. on September 20, 2024, police received a 911 call about a domestic dispute at a residence in Moonbeam. Before police arrived, the man fled the residence in a vehicle.
  • Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop and block the man’s vehicle on Highway 11 east of Moonbeam. The man drove into a police vehicle. An officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle. The man fled on foot and was later located by police.
  • He did not sustain any firearm injuries.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. One subject official and one witness official have been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
