Mississauga, ON (29 August, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is appealing for witnesses to the arrest of a 28-year-old man in Toronto this past weekend.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly after 11:15 p.m. on August 24, 2024, Toronto Police Service officers in the Yonge-Dundas Square area observed a man who fit the description of a motorcyclist who police had been investigating earlier. The man was on foot at this time.
  • When officers attempted to arrest the man, he fled.
  • A short time later, the man was captured and arrested in the southwest corner of the Square.
  • When the man complained of pain, he was transported to hospital for treatment of a serious injury.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

It is believed that many people witnessed the arrest and recorded it with cell phones. The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at:  https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
