SIU Investigating Serious Injury of Man During Arrest at Durham Regional Police Station in Pickering

Mississauga, ON (29 July, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 29-year-old man was seriously injured during his arrest by Durham Regional Police Service officers on Saturday afternoon.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the man entered the west division police station in Pickering while armed with an air pistol and discharged projectiles.
  • Two officers attempted to arrest the man, during which two officers discharged their conducted energy weapons. They were not successful in subduing the man.
  • Continued efforts were made to bring the man into custody. The man barricaded himself in the public restroom in the detachment.
  • The man shot the air pistol multiple times.
  • The man was eventually arrested and taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with a serious injury.
  • Durham Regional Police Service reports that two officers suffered minor injuries.
Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
