SIU Concludes Vehicle Death Investigation in Wellington County
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the circumstances surrounding the death of a 30-year-old Milton man in Wellington County in a collision on Sunday July 17.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) contacted the SIU yesterday afternoon and reported the following:
- Wellington County OPP were operating radar on the Hanlon Expressway in Guelph;
- Three motorcycles travelling southbound went through the radar;
- At 3:30 p.m. one of the motorcycles collided with a vehicle in the intersection of the Hanlon Expressway and County Road 34;
- The motorcyclist was transported to Hamilton General Hospital;
- The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at 7:40 p.m.; and
- A post mortem was conducted this morning in Hamilton.
The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to investigate the circumstances surrounding this occurrence.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
