SIU Investigating Fatal Collision in Toronto After Driver Fled Toronto Police Service Officers

Mississauga, ON (13 March, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man died and another man was critically injured in a collision this morning in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 6:30 a.m., Toronto Police Service officers attempted to stop the driver of a Mercedes-Benz SUV for speeding. The SUV was also reportedly stolen.
  • The driver fled at high speed. The driver became involved in a collision, involving a total of six vehicles, at the intersection of Markham Road and Milner Avenue.
  • The driver of the SUV was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
  • The driver of a van was taken to hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Three investigators, a collision reconstructionist and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
