SIU Concludes Investigation into Death of Man, 40, in Toronto

Mississauga, ON (27 February, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 40-year-old man early yesterday morning in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On Saturday, February 24, 2024, at about 1:10 p.m., the man was stopped by security staff at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. 
  • The man was displaying signs of distress. Off-duty Toronto Police Service officers assisted.
  • Officers contacted EMS as the man needed medical attention.
  • The man was transported by ambulance to hospital. 
  • He was pronounced deceased in hospital in the early hours of Monday, February 26, 2024. 
The post-mortem was completed today (Tuesday).

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
