SIU Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Greater Sudbury

Mississauga, ON (22 February, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injuries suffered by a 40-year-old man yesterday in Greater Sudbury.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On the morning of February 21, 2024, Greater Sudbury Police Service officers attended a residence on Jean Street to apprehend a man under the Mental Health Act. 
  • The man barricaded himself in his residence. Attempts to negotiate with the man were unsuccessful.
  • Later that afternoon, there was an interaction with the man, who was armed with an edged weapon, and one officer discharged his firearm. The man was struck. 
  • He surrendered and was transported to hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
