SIU Discontinues Investigation into Fatal Crash on QEW in Burlington

Mississauga, ON (29 January, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 26-year-old man died in a collision involving a pick-up truck that fled Halton Regional Police Service officers in Burlington early this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 3:45 a.m. on January 29, 2024, two Halton Regional Police Service officers stopped the driver of a truck for speeding on the Queen Elizabeth Way at Guelph Line. The driver fled. The officers came upon a collision at the Brant Street off ramp. It was the pickup truck.
  • There were four occupants in the truck. All four were taken to hospital. One individual was pronounced deceased in hospital.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
