SIU Investigating After Man Shot by OPP Officer in Marmora Area

Mississauga, ON (15 December, 2023) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after an Ontario Provincial Police officer shot and injured a 48-year-old man in the Marmora area early this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 3:30 p.m. yesterday, officers were called to a remote hunting cabin in the area of Twin Sister Lakes Road for a man making threats.
  • When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in the cabin.
  • Police negotiators and tactical officers were sent to the scene.
  • There was an interaction with police and the man, and an officer shot a less-lethal firearm.
  • The man shot at police. An officer shot the man with a firearm. The man was arrested and taken to hospital via ambulance.
  • The man is in hospital in Kingston.
Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
