SIU Completes Investigation into Conduct of OPP Huron County Officers in Relation to Man’s Self-Inflicted Death in Goderich

Mississauga, ON (23 June, 2023) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 48-year-old man yesterday in Goderich.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 1:15 p.m. on June 22, 2023, the Ontario Provincial Police was requested to check on the well-being of a man.
  • Around 2:30 p.m., OPP officers located the man’s vehicle in the parking lot of a motel on Bayfield Road.
  • Officers located the man in a room. Emergency Medical Services arrived and subsequently pronounced the man deceased.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem took place today in London.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
