SIU Investigates Fatal Shooting in Toronto

At approximately 11:02 p.m. on May 27, 2005, Toronto Police Service (TPS) officers responded to a 911 trouble call from a woman at 1898 Sheppard Avenue West. Police, fire and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the call. Upon arrival, a woman was found outside of the house suffering from serious stab wounds. Police officers entered the home and found a second woman also suffering what appeared to be fatal stab wounds. While inside the house, a TPS officer was involved in a confrontation with a 34-year-old man, resulting in shots being fired. The man was struck and died this morning at approximately 3:00 a.m. in hospital.
The SIU has designated 1 subject and 7 witness officers from the TPS. Investigators are canvassing for witnesses and the SIU is appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to call the Unit at 416-622-1957.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
