SIU Concludes Investigation into Man’s Death in St. George

Mississauga, ON (12 March, 2023) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 67-year-old man in St. George.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • On March 11, 2023, officers from Brant County Ontario Provincial Police responded to a call for a wellness check on a man at his property in the area of Highway 5 and Brant Road in St. George.
  • The next day officers received another call for service and returned, locating the man deceased on the property.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. A post-mortem will be scheduled.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
