SIU Concludes Investigation into Aurora Collision between Cruiser and Civilian Vehicle

Case Number: 22-OVI-214

Mississauga, ON (21 December, 2022) ---
On August 22, 2022, a York Regional Police officer was en route to a call when his cruiser struck an Audi in Aurora. The Audi’s 23-year-old male driver and 22-year-old female passenger were both seriously injured. SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer transgressed the limits of care prescribed by the criminal law. As such, there was no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case.  The file has been closed.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
