SIU Concludes Investigation into London Collision

Mississauga, ON (25 October, 2022) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision involving a van that was being pursued by London Police Service officers yesterday morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, October 24, 2022, officers were investigating a break and enter when they saw a suspicious van. The driver of the vehicle fled.
  • Officers deployed spike belts and the driver ran over them and went through the intersection of Pond Mills Road and Commissioners Road, striking a civilian vehicle. 
  • The male driver of the civilian vehicle suffered serious injuries.
  • The male driver of the van fled on foot and a female passenger was located inside the van. It is unknown at this time if she suffered any injury.
Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. At this time, one subject official and four witness officials have been designated.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
